The Typical Camper
Of course there are beginner- and intermediate level campers, but have you ever considered who the typical camper is? Who is that guy that goes camping regularly? How does he compare to the average guy on the street? Does his camping knowledge somehow make him a better person in other ways?I think it's probably fair to say that the typical camper is a male, aged 25 to 55 years. He most likely has at least a high school education and he probably enjoys a drink now and again. This camper most likely combines other activities with camping, perhaps that of fishing, boating, hunting, hiking, etc.
For this description I'm going to call my typical solo-camper 'Biff'. Although Biff's real identity will remain confidential he is in fact a real person and these things I'm about to disclose are true and based on actual events.
On more than one camping excursion Biff has been exposed to extreme weather conditions. Perhaps he forgot to check the weather forecast before leaving home or perhaps Biff decided to be stubborn (or stupid) and risk it. Whatever the reason Biff has been lucky so far, he has survived two severe thunderstorms and one tornado which hit very close to his campsite a few years back. But being the trooper that he is, Biff has not given up on camping, oh no, he loves it and he continues to this day. They say what doesn't kill you makes you stronger right? Well enter Biff.
Biff has gone camping on the spur of the moment many times, without any preparation at all, taking nothing but his fishing gear, a loaf of bread, a package of bologna, a six pack of beer and six cokes. During those trips he simply sleeps in his truck.
Obviously these were his not-so-typical camping trips...
Okay, so now you know about the typical camper, he loves to go camping and he will go on a whim at the drop of a hat. Although he knows the rules of safety he does not always follow them. By the way, Biff was also in the military; he learned about safety first-hand so he really does know that he should be careful and put safety first.Biff does not care about finding a camping site that offers electricity and water, he does not look for a campground that has a shower or any other amenities unless he is going with or bringing along someone else. Only then does he care about such things.
To Biff camping is camping
Primitive camping is just fine for Biff. Many of his friends, including his wife, feel very strongly that camping should include at least some of those amenities so perhaps Biff is not the typical camper at all. Maybe he is atypical after all?Back to the question about camping making you a better person, well it can teach you to be flexible and innovative in some ways. Are you any different than the average guy on the street? Hmmm, that depends on the situation, you may get to experience some things that the average person doesn't, and see some things they don't. Camping is a wonderful way to spend some time but a word of caution:
